Job Description

Elevator Mechanic Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for an Elevator Mechanic. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Perform journey-level work maintaining, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing hydraulic elevators, traction elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, wheelchair lifts, residence elevators, other conveyances, and hoisting equipment and performing specialized work to maintain, adjust, and repair elevators, hook lifts, dumb waiters, overhead movable cranes and hoists, etc. Perform repair work on conveyance equipment of various vintages and manufacturers, including modern computerized equipment. Repair or replace conveyance parts, including electrical and electronic components, and a variety of other mechanical components used in elevator or conveyance systems. Responsible for properly maintaining a preventive maintenance program on conveyance equipment, components, and systems, and completing an approved Washington State Maintenance Control Program (MCP) and other documentation requirements for conveyance equipment, including elevator/escalator log sheets. Inspect, adjust for proper operation, and maintain hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical components installed in elevators, dumb waiters, escalators, moving walks, and hoists. Troubleshoot and repair problems with conveyances in an efficient manner relating to all aspects of the conveyance equipment and systems. Responsible for reliable maintenance, service, and operation of assigned group of conveyance equipment containing hydraulic elevators, traction elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, residential elevators, dumbwaiters and other conveyances and hoisting equipment. Perform annual and quarterly inspections and tests of elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, dumbwaiters, and other conveyances required by Labor and Industries. Respond to trouble calls and emergencies such as conveyance outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property, damage to research activities, and disruption to life-safety systems as required. Read and interpret conveyances schematics in order to troubleshoot problems and maintain and update conveyance system schematics through red line system changes. Inspect contractors’ work to see that work is performed to campus specifications. Identify and order parts as required. Review, initiate, and retrieve work orders. Ability to prioritize multiple work tasks efficiently. Communicate with campus clientele and building occupants regarding status of elevator problems/repairs. Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with attention to customer service. Work as a team partner with other elevator mechanics daily in a professional manner always to resolve conveyance system issues and associated equipment. Perform material handling, rigging, and hoisting, etc. Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment. This position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and routine scheduled overtime. Ensure compliance with local standards and codes and maintain records of work performed. Perform duties and necessary job tasks of an elevator mechanic as defined in the WAC 296-96 Chapter of the elevator mechanic safety rules. Perform the work in accordance with applicable safety rules and environmental regulatory requirements and maintain records as required according to environmental requirements. Interpret National Elevator Codes and WAC Chapter 296-96 regulations for all elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, and other conveyances. Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including the use of personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the supervisor. Follow and enforce adherence to all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures. Keep informed of applicable codes and safety regulations. Drive service vehicle as needed. Attend all required meetings and training. May perform work in other trades. Perform alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment. Education & Experience Minimal Requirements Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an elevator mechanic; OR full journey status as an elevator mechanic in a union; OR four years’ applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required. Additional Requirements Have and maintain a class 01 or class 08 Elevator Mechanic License per WAC 296-96-00910. Desired Experience working independently as an elevator service mechanic for a licensed elevator contractor or as an employee of a public agency. Certification of completion of an elevator mechanic’s apprenticeship program. Conditions of Employment The elevator mechanic is responsible for maintaining the class 01 or class 08 Elevator Mechanic License and must ensure that it does not expire during employment. Obtain and maintain applicable education credits for Elevator Mechanic License per WAC 296-96-00910. Must attend an approved Labor & Industries elevator continuing education course and receive a certificate of completion for the course. The course must consist of no less than eight hours. This course must be attended and completed within one year immediately preceding any Elevator Mechanic license renewal. Pass an examination administered by Labor & Industries on Chapter 70.87 RCW and WAC 296-96 elevators. Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours. Must be able to lift or carry heavy objects, work in confined spaces, restricted movement areas, mechanical/electrical spaces, elevator machine rooms, pits and shafts, etc. for extended periods of time and be able to climb ladders and work at heights. The position requires working with asbestos containing equipment, following proper procedures. The position requires the wearing of personal protective equipment appropriate to the job task. Must be able to work in animal research areas using the appropriate personal protective equipment. Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job. Must always maintain professional appearance and demonstrate professionalism. Strong customer service skills, and the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with clients, students, staff, crew, contractors and personnel. Must be able to communicate effectively, including using portable hand-held radios. Must be able to work both independently, as well as a team member. Must be able to work in a diverse workforce. Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. Regular and predictable attendance is required.
