SUMMARY

Machinist plans and performs machining operations on tools, dies, fixtures and gauges under general supervision; plan operating sequences; select speeds and feeds; may improvise; tryout tools, dies or gauges. Operate in accordance with manufacturing, production, and quality standards and meet customer build specifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan and perform diversified machining operations to produce tool, die, fixture and gauge components having close and exacting tolerances and finish requirements, interrelated dimensions, formed sections and contours requiring a working knowledge of machining methods, techniques and operating skills.
• Usually specialize on a specific machine tool type, but scope of operations generally requires the operation of several types where setups and operations are recognized as standard machining practices.
• Plan operations, select tooling, machine attachments and work holding methods; set spindle speeds and tool feed rates.
• Grind or prescribe grind for tooling best suited for material characteristics or the nature of the cutting operations.
• Set and adjust tooling, position and secure workpiece in machine, set bed travel and tool travel stops, calibrate tool to workpiece reference point and operate controls to machine work.
• May, with assistance, improvise tooling, machine attachments and methods to perform unusual operations.
• Assist other operators to make tool tryouts on new or modified tools.
• Work from drawings, sketches, job layouts and verbal directions.
• Use scale, square, protractor, calipers, micrometers, precision blocks, indicators, verniers, etc., to setup and operate machines and to check work.
• Under general supervision; instructions and guidance provided on the more difficult and unusual work and on setup and operating problems.
• Visually inspect all parts for missing or incomplete operations. Gage and indicate machined characteristics to quality standards. Make sure all tooling is in accordance with print specification of part to be produced.
• Comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations.
• Perform specified equipment maintenance and cleaning.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus three years trade training experience. Three to five years related experience and applied computer knowledge and blueprint reading required. Must be able/willing to work all shifts.
